Did You Know?
The second woman and fourth person -- and first Canadian -- to ever win medals in both winter and summer Olympics, Clara first made a name for herself by netting two Bronze medals at the Atlanta Summer Olympics in cycling: one was earned in road racing, the other in time trials. But decades earlier, few would have guessed Clara would make history. The five-time Olympic medalist admits to a chequered youth, describing herself as an "undisciplined, pseudo-amoral girl" who ran away from home as she pleased, buying beer for her friends at age 13 and smoking a pack of cigarettes a day by the time she was 16. She was that same age when she decided to change her life, a decision set in motion by springtime, after watching speed skating on the tube, during the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics.
