Montreal Comiccon: From Manga to Sci-Fi
When Montreal Comiccon first debuted in 2006, around the same time New York premiered its own version of what's been a San Diego tradition since 1970, the event was strictly about comic books. Fast-forward four years and the two-day conference held every September expanded beyond print to include television and film covering genres as varied as fantasy, sci-fi, horror, and even hints of pro wrestling, considering an appearance by Sergeant Slaughter in 2011. And as of 2012, the event extended its usual two-day run to three days, if only to accommodate its growing list of featured guests. By 2013, its attendance peaked at 42,000, roughly 10,000 above its previous year.

The 2014 edition of Montreal Comiccon runs September 12 to September 14, 2014 at the Palais des congrès (map) and features the following celebrity guests. Admission ranges from $20 for a day pass to $195 for a three-day VIP pass (less for children). Buy tickets.

Admission in 2013 ranged from $5 to $175. Children ages 5 and under entered free. Buy tickets.

Montreal Comiccon: Buy Tickets Online
Buying tickets ahead of time is strongly recommended as the three-day event is known to sell out quickly. For example, in 2011, organizers ran out of tickets and had to start turning people away as of 2:30 p.m. on Day 1, barely three hours into the event.

Montreal Comiccon: Tips for Beating Lineups
Montreal Comiccon lineups, from catching a guest panel to buying an autograph to getting into Comiccon at all, are practically inevitable. Apart from arming yourself with zen-like patience, one way to at least avoid the massive lineup at the door is to get there as early as you can, preferably in the morning. As for panels, get there at least 30 minutes in advance for a decent seat.

Montreal Comiccon: Past Guests
The biggest Comiccon draw is the special guest lineup usually featuring a mix of star illustrators, comic book creators, genre television actors and film stars. Past guests include:

  • Malcolm McDowell (Alex of A Clockwork Orange)
  • Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Picard of Star Trek: Next Generation)
  • William Shatner (Captain Kirk of the original Star Trek series)
  • Brent Spiner (Data of Star Trek: Next Generation)
  • John de Lancie (Q of Star Trek: Next Generation)
  • Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher of Star Trek: Next Generation)
  • Stan Lee (creator of Spider-Man, X-Men, The Incredible Hulk, Thor and The Fantastic Four)
  • Kevin Sorbo (Hercules)
  • Adam West (the original Batman)
  • Doug Bradley (Pinhead in Hellraiser)
  • Marina Sirtis (Deanna Troi in Star Trek: The New Generation)

  • James Marsters (Spike in Buffy the Vampire Slayer)
