Les escales improbables de Montréal
In its sixth year, Les Escales explores, as per usual, the "unexpected" side of visual arts, music, et. al., but organizers want you to just show up at the Old Port without a schedule this year. And there is no schedule, just a list of artists. What I can tell you is between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on any day of the event, and you might see graffiti arts in progress, three dancers "conversing" with a car, maybe a box. Also, the The National Parcs will be one of the artists featured during musical nap time, a regular Escales feature.

September 11 to November 1st, 2009
The Magic of Lanterns at the Montreal Botanical Garden
Every year's Chinese garden lantern setup is comely. The 17th edition proposes a Traditional Chinese Astronomy theme, with new lanterns designed here, then produced in Montreal's sister city, Shanghai using traditional methods. On everyday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and same price as admission to the Botanical Garden.

September 12, 2009
An Evening With Matthieu Ricard
Matthieu Ricard, a molecular biology-trained Buddhist monk/Dalai Lama French interpreter, explains why altruism may be a key solution to the global economic crisis. Not likely to keep a young child's attention, tweens and teens risk finding Ricard's proposals inspiring, maybe even fascinating.

Montreal Ukrainian Festival
Showcasing song, dance, food and other facets of Ukrainian culture, the tenth edition features 2005 Canadian Idol finalist Theresa Sokyrka, traditional and ballroom dance and performances on Ukraine's national instrument, the bandura. It's all happening outdoors at Parc de l'Ukraine.

Activities for kids, product tastings and a chance to buy directly from local farmers, learn more about their craft and maybe get in the loop on any existing food co-ops. Information in French only.
