With his young partner at his side, a 12-year-old monk, the eclectic choreographer orchestrates a ballet for 17 young Buddhist kung fu masters … and 21 wooden boxes."

Montreal's Coup de Coeur Francophone
The 23rd edition features over 60 shows over the course of 10 days. Best bets include Gypsy Sound System, Shampouing, Jipé Dalpé, Les Psycho Riders, slam with Queen Ka, Suarez, Chic Gamine, Peppe Voltarelli, the engimatic Bori shows his long-hidden face and Pierre Lapointe goes alone onstage with his piano. Cinemania Film Festival
No risk of bombs nor bores at this best bet French film fest, which may have something to do with Montreal's Cinemania honing in on French films with generally high-end production budgets -- at least, for Europe -- that have already proved themselves at high-profile, prestigious festivals such as those in Cannes, Berlin, and Venice. Montreal's international documentary festival does anything but hold back in 2009, exploring Coca Cola's alleged involvement in the "systematic intimidation, kidnapping, torture and murder of [Columbian] union leaders" in The Coca Cola Case, showing -- sometimes, with a hidden camera -- how China's justice system functions for the everyday petitioner in Pétition (La Cour Des Plaignants) and October Country follows the lives of a working class American family grappling with a plethora of problems, from economic instability to domestic abuse to war trauma and sexual molestation.
