Montreal's Magasins-Partage

An Alternative to Food Banks for Montreal Families in Need

By Evelyn Reid, About.com

What is a magasin-partage?
An alternative to food banks, Montreal's magasins-partage, translated literally as "share-stores," help people and families in need, giving them the freedom to choose the food items they require (e.g., a diabetic in need is not in a position to just eat anything they're given at a food bank) while asking for a donation equivalent to 10% to 15% of the actual cost of the food selected in the share-store. All of the money is then reinvested in the share-store, helping those same families make a difference in their community, all in a context of respect and dignity.

Can anyone join a magasin-partage?
