How do I report a pothole in Montreal?

By , About.com Guide

Question: How do I report a pothole in Montreal?

Potholes are not only unsightly, they can be downright dangerous to motorists, cyclists, even pedestrians. Who can you contact if you spot a nasty nid-de-poule in Montreal?

Answer: There are two ways to report a pothole in Montreal and in both cases, it's important to indicate its precise location to ensure repair crews spot the offending canker in question.

Before reporting the nid-de-poule, remember to note:

  • the street the pothole is located on
  • the closest intersection
  • the closest address
  • any nearby stores, commerces or landmarks
Call 311.
Contact the city. Record the date you notified them and see if it's been filled. If it's not patched within a week, call again.

Fill out the Pothole Watch form online.
CAA-Quebec's Pothole Watch program is one way to have a written record of a pothole's existence. Once a pothole is reported, the city must patch the hole promptly. If ever you get into an accident and damage your vehicle on that same reported pothole, you may be able to claim damages from the city or file a lawsuit on grounds of neglect.

Consult the CAA-Quebec Pothole Watch forum for more information.
