While mainstream buzz waxes over Lady Gaga's appearance at the Bell Centre tonight, I'm gaga in my own little world over a certain R 'n' B artist whose name is gently emerging from a near-decade slumber. Should have known the lovely peeps of POP Montreal were the promoter juice behind the latest neo soul talent to grace my ear drums, an Atlanta native standing out from the pack playing the city this month.
His name is Cody ChestnuTT. His 2002 debut double indie album The Headphone Masterpiece rippled out onto The Roots' collaborative reworking roster, setting the stage for an MTV Video Music Award nomination and then poof. By late 2003, ChestnuTT retreated into an obscurity featuring copiuous philandering, rock 'n' roll and epiphany-inspired family-raising until an E.P. stint in 2010 followed by his fall 2012 sophomore full-length release Landing On A Hundred led him back to the touring spotlight.
Cody ChestnuTT drops by Petit Campus this Tuesday, February 12. Admission $28.95 plus shipping/box office charge. Buy tickets.
