So the rumor mill is in overtime this morning as to why Will Smith was spotted at Montreal Fashion Week last night. Speculation abounds that he was in town filming a movie. I know Helen Mirren and Anthony Hopkins were recently in Montreal for that reason, but Will Smith? News to me. Does it have something to do with Black History Month festivities? Harry Belafonte passed through for last year's edition, so why not Will Smith? The standout explanation so far is that he came to support Montreal designer Ralph Leroy and his friend, Miss Haiti Universe 2010 and Reina Hispanoamericana 2012 beauty queen Sarodj Bertin, who sashayed on the catwalk as one of Leroy's showstopper models, which also included Miami-based Kiki Barth and Haitian model Nayeli Fanfan. And what a show. Leroy, apart from attracting the biggest A-lister Montreal Fashion Week has ever seen in its entire history, is really coming into his own.
I had a chance to chat with Leroy after his catwalk presentation, which ended with a standing ovation, and a camera frenzy ensuing courtesy of Will Smith who was all smiles and handshakes throughout the evening. Leroy also drew in Canada's grand dame of fashion, former Fashion Television host Jeanne Beker, who made a bee line and appeared just before me to interview him. From what I could tell, Beker was just passing through Montreal Fashion Week, if only for Leroy's show, which was my impression*.
MORE PHOTOS AND INTERVIEW TO COME.
11:33 A.M. UPDATE: apparently, as per Huffington Post Quebec contributor Christine Elizabeth Laprade, Beker had originally come to Montreal to catch the Martin Lim show, which was held right after Leroy's. Smith did not attend that show. Laprade also said a high end real estate agent as well as a little birdie from the Montréal Film and TV Commission both told her that Smith was due to film a movie in town.
