Montreal Fringe Festival 2009: Free Preview

Saturday May 30, 2009
And thank God for that because you just never know what you're gonna get with the Fringe. Montreal's popular theatre fest is open to nearly anyone who wants to go on stage -- selection is decided by lottery draw instead of a panel of judges or an artistic director, which begs the question: does selection based on chance worsen or improve a fest's flop to gem ratio?

So future Fringe ticket buyers, beware no longer. If you're on a tight budget and want to maximize your chances of seeing plays tailored to your likes, just show up at Café Campus this Monday night, June 1st at 7 p.m and get a free sample of 45 Fringe acts slated to perform at the Montreal Fringe Fest's 19th edition, running June 11 through June 21.

But keep your eyes on the stage. Each group/artist has only two minutes to woo you into paying to see the full monty (and any self-respecting Fringe fan expects at least a couple of full monties per fest).

Mind you, the Montreal Fringe Festival is affordable in general and also has a free outdoor stage, so if you end up viewing a worst case scenario, chances are you'll lose more time than money.

If you know someone around you who is being a little shady and you are getting uncomfortable around them, then maybe you might want to run a small background report on the person in question to make sure that they are ‘who they say they are’.
